Cricut Not Cutting All the Way Through? 9 Fixes That Work
Updated July 2026 · SVG Design Factory
Few things are more frustrating than a beautiful design that won't cut cleanly. When your Cricut cuts partway through — or tears instead of cutting — it's almost always one of a handful of fixable causes. Work through these nine fixes in order and you'll solve the vast majority of incomplete-cut problems, whether you're cutting vinyl, iron-on, or cardstock.
Why a Cricut won't cut all the way through
Incomplete cuts come down to three things: the blade (dull, dirty, or not seated), the settings (wrong material or too little pressure), or the material (shifting on a worn mat). The fixes below cover all three, starting with the quickest wins.
9 fixes for a Cricut not cutting through
Fix 1: Double-check your material setting
The #1 cause is the wrong material selected. Make sure the setting matches what you're actually cutting — and if you use the Custom setting, confirm it's set to the right material, not a leftover from your last project.
Fix 2: Replace or rotate the blade
Blades dull faster than people expect. If cuts have gotten worse over time, drop in a fresh blade — it fixes incomplete cuts more often than anything else.
Fix 3: Clean the blade
Tiny slivers of vinyl and paper stick inside the blade housing. Push the blade into a ball of aluminum foil a dozen times, or pick out debris, so it can rotate freely.
Fix 4: Bump up the pressure
In the cut settings, nudge the pressure up one level (More or a custom +). Small increases fix thicker or textured materials without chewing the mat.
Fix 5: Use the right mat and press the material down
A worn, non-sticky mat lets material shift mid-cut. Use a mat with enough grip for your material and burnish the material down firmly with a scraper before cutting.
Fix 6: Run a test cut
Before a big project, cut a small test shape in a corner. It's the fastest way to dial in settings without wasting material.
Fix 7: Check the blade housing is seated
Make sure the blade housing is pushed all the way into the clamp and the clamp is fully closed — a loose housing rides too high to cut cleanly.
Fix 8: Update your machine and app
Occasionally an outdated firmware or app version causes odd cutting behavior. Update Design Space and your machine firmware, then retry.
Fix 9: Slow the cut speed
For intricate designs, a slower speed gives the blade time to cut completely through fine detail instead of skipping.
Still not cutting? A quick checklist
- Fresh blade + correct setting solves most cases on its own.
- Firm mat grip keeps material from lifting mid-cut.
- Always test-cut before committing to a full project.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I replace my Cricut blade?
There's no fixed schedule — it depends on how much and what you cut. If clean settings and a firm mat still give incomplete cuts, the blade is the most likely culprit, so swap it first.
Why does my Cricut cut through the backing?
That's the opposite problem — too much pressure or a material setting that's too aggressive. Lower the pressure or pick a lighter material setting and test again.
